Chuck > On the bridge, looking back towards the Upper Peninsula.
Chuck > Getting closer to the first tower. The Mackinac Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere and third-longest in the world. (Measuring the distance between the endpoints where the bridge meets land, that is. It's the sixth-longest in the world if you measure only the suspended part, and the tenth-longest in the world if you measure the main span only.)
Chuck > School buses, as seen on the right, return walkers to their starting point (for those who parked in St. Ignace on the Upper Peninsula), or take walkers to the starting point of the walk (if they parked in Mackinaw City on the Lower Peninsula).
Chuck > At the start of the suspended part of the bridge. I've already walked about a mile and a half on the bridge just to get to this point.

The bridge is nearly 200 feet above the water at its center, but the grade is so gentle that you hardly even notice you're walking uphill for the first half of the walk. Chuck > The middle two lanes of the four-lane bridge are grates, which reduce the effect of wind on the bridge. During the walk, you can look down through the grating and see the lake far below.
